“Rez-opoly” is a political cartoon-style painting that addresses the complicated discussion surrounding tribal casinos. The artwork challenges the assumption that casinos automatically make all Native people and tribal communities wealthy. While some people are shown celebrating and holding money, the money is also shown quickly leaving in bags and being hauled away. The “Rez-opoly” game at the bottom represents how tribal gaming can sometimes feel like a complicated game involving money, power, politics, sovereignty, and outside interests. The piece uses humor and bright colors to encourage a deeper conversation about who truly benefits from casinos and how tribal gaming is often misunderstood by the public.
